Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ
-
- Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?
Initially, medical alert systems were created to work inside your house, with your landline telephone.
And you can still go that route. Lots of businesses now also provide the option of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who may not have a landline.
With these systems, pressing the wearable call button permits you to talk to a dispatcher through a base unit located in your home.
Numerous businesses offer mobile choices, too. You can utilize these systems at home, however they’ll also permit you to call for help while you’re out and about.
These run over cellular networks and incorporate GPS technology. This way, if you get lost or press the call button for assistance, but are unable to talk, the monitoring service can find you.
Some companies provide the choice of automatic fall detection, for an additional month-to-month cost. Makers say these devices notice falls when they happen and automatically call the dispatch center, simply as they would if you had pressed the call button.
Costs. Be careful of complex rate strategies and hidden fees. Look for a company without any extra fees associated with devices, shipping, setup, activation, or service and repair work. Do not succumb to frauds that provide totally free service or “donated or used” devices.
You need to just have to pay ongoing month-to-month charges, which should vary between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Be careful about paying for service in advance, considering that you never understand when you’ll require to stop the service temporarily (due to a hospitalization, for circumstances) or completely.
Guarantee and cancellation policies. Try to find a complete money-back warranty, or at least a trial duration, in case you are not pleased with the service. And you’ll want the ability to cancel at any time without any charges (and a complete refund if month-to-month fees have already been paid).
Discount rates. Inquire about discounts for numerous individuals in the same home, in addition to for veterans, membership organizations, medical insurance or by means of a hospital, medical or care organization. Ask if the company uses any discount rates alternatives or a moving fee scale for people with lower incomes.
Insurance coverage. For the many part, Medicare and personal insurance provider will not cover the expenses of a medical alert. In some States, Medicaid might cover all or part of the cost. You can check with your personal insurer to see if it offers discounts or recommendations.
Tax reductions. Consult your tax professional to find out if the expense of a medical alert is tax deductible as a medically essential cost.
