Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

    1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Initially, medical alert systems were developed to work inside your home, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Many businesses now also use the option of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who may not have a landline.

With these systems, pushing the wearable call button allows you to speak to a dispatcher through a base unit situated in your home.

Lots of businesses provide mobile options, too. You can utilize these systems at home, however they’ll also enable you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These run over cellular networks and incorporate GPS technology. By doing this, if you get lost or press the call button for aid, but are unable to talk, the tracking service can locate you.

  • Should You Include a Fall-Detection Function?

Some companies use the alternative of automatic fall detection, for an additional month-to-month fee. Producers state these gadgets notice falls when they happen and automatically get in touch with the dispatch center, simply as they would if you had pressed the call button.

  • Whats the Cost?

Look for a business with no extra costs related to devices, shipping, setup, activation, or service and repair work. Don’t fall for scams that provide free service or “donated or used” equipment.
You need to only have to pay ongoing monthly charges, which must vary between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Be careful about paying for service in advance, since you never ever know when you’ll need to stop the service temporarily (due to a hospitalization, for circumstances) or completely.
Assurance and cancellation policies. Try to find a full money-back guarantee, or a minimum of a trial duration, in case you are not pleased with the service. And you’ll want the ability to cancel at any time with no penalties (and a full refund if regular monthly charges have already been paid).
Discount rates. Ask about discounts for several people in the same family, as well as for veterans, subscription organizations, medical insurance or via a healthcare facility, medical or care organization. Ask if the business provides any discount rates options or a sliding fee scale for individuals with lower earnings.
For the a lot of part, Medicare and personal insurance coverage businesses will not cover the costs of a medical alert. You can check with your private insurance company to see if it uses discounts or referrals.
Tax reductions. Contact your tax accountant to learn if the expense of a medical alert is tax deductible as a clinically necessary expense.
