Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ
-
- Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?
Initially, medical alert systems were developed to work inside your home, with your landline telephone.
And you can still go that route. Numerous companies now also offer the option of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who may not have a landline.
With these systems, pressing the wearable call button enables you to speak with a dispatcher through a base unit located in your home.
Lots of businesses offer mobile choices, too. You can utilize these systems in the house, however they’ll also allow you to call for help while you’re out and about.
These run over cellular networks and include GPS technology. By doing this, if you get lost or press the call button for aid, but are not able to talk, the tracking service can locate you.
Some businesses offer the option of automatic fall detection, for an additional monthly fee. Manufacturers say these devices notice falls when they take place and instantly contact the dispatch center, just as they would if you had pushed the call button.
Look for a company with no additional charges related to devices, shipping, installation, activation, or service and repair work. Don’t fall for frauds that offer totally free service or “donated or utilized” devices.
Agreements. You must not need to enter into a long-lasting agreement. You need to only have to pay ongoing month-to-month charges, which should vary in between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Be careful about spending for service beforehand, given that you never understand when you’ll need to stop the service momentarily (due to a hospitalization, for instance) or completely.
Assurance and cancellation policies. Look for a complete money-back warranty, or a minimum of a trial duration, in case you are not pleased with the service. And you’ll want the capability to cancel at any time without any charges (and a full refund if monthly fees have actually already been paid).
Discounts. Inquire about discounts for several people in the very same household, along with for veterans, membership companies, medical insurance or via a hospital, medical or care organization. Ask if the company uses any discount rates options or a sliding charge scale for people with lower incomes.
Insurance coverage. For the most part, Medicare and personal insurer will not cover the expenses of a medical alert. In some States, Medicaid may cover all or part of the expense. You can consult your private insurance company to see if it offers discounts or referrals.
Tax reductions. Contact your tax accountant to learn if the expense of a medical alert is tax deductible as a clinically required cost.
