Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ
-
- Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?
Originally, medical alert systems were created to work inside your home, with your landline telephone.
And you can still go that route. Lots of businesses now also offer the option of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who may not have a landline.
With these systems, pressing the wearable call button enables you to talk to a dispatcher through a base unit located in your house.
However, many companies use mobile choices, too. You can use these systems in your home, however they’ll also permit you to call for help while you’re out and about.
These operate over cellular networks and integrate GPS technology. By doing this, if you get lost or push the call button for aid, but are not able to talk, the monitoring service can find you.
Some companies offer the choice of automatic fall detection, for an extra monthly charge. Producers state these devices sense falls when they happen and automatically contact the dispatch center, simply as they would if you had actually pushed the call button.
Look for a business with no additional charges related to devices, shipping, installation, activation, or service and repair work. Do not fall for frauds that use totally free service or “donated or used” devices.
Agreements. You need to not have to enter into a long-term agreement. You need to only have to pay continuous month-to-month fees, which must vary between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Take care about spending for service ahead of time, because you never know when you’ll have to stop the service briefly (due to a hospitalization, for instance) or permanently.
Guarantee and cancellation policies. Try to find a complete money-back guarantee, or a minimum of a trial period, in case you are not satisfied with the service. And you’ll desire the capability to cancel at any time without any charges (and a complete refund if month-to-month charges have currently been paid).
Discount rates. Ask about discount rates for several people in the same family, as well as for veterans, subscription companies, medical insurance coverage or via a health center, medical or care company. Ask if the company provides any discount options or a sliding fee scale for individuals with lower incomes.
Insurance. For the many part, Medicare and personal insurance companies will not cover the expenses of a medical alert. In some States, Medicaid might cover all or part of the expense. You can consult your personal insurer to see if it uses discount rates or referrals.
Tax deductions. Check with your tax professional to discover if the cost of a medical alert is tax deductible as a clinically essential cost.
