Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

    1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Initially, medical alert systems were developed to work inside your home, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Numerous companies now also use the choice of home-based systems that work over a mobile network, for those who might not have a landline.

With these systems, pressing the wearable call button permits you to speak to a dispatcher through a base system located in your home.

But, many companies provide mobile options, too. You can utilize these systems at home, however they’ll also enable you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These run over cellular networks and include GPS technology. In this manner, if you get lost or push the call button for help, but are unable to talk, the tracking service can find you.

  • Should You Include a Fall-Detection Feature?

Some businesses offer the alternative of automatic fall detection, for an additional regular monthly charge. Producers say these devices pick up falls when they take place and automatically contact the dispatch center, just as they would if you had pushed the call button.

  • Whats the Cost?

Look for a company with no additional charges related to equipment, shipping, setup, activation, or service and repair work. Do not fall for frauds that offer free service or “donated or utilized” equipment.
Agreements. You should not have to enter into a long-lasting agreement. You ought to just have to pay ongoing month-to-month fees, which need to vary between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Be careful about spending for service ahead of time, since you never ever understand when you’ll have to stop the service temporarily (due to a hospitalization, for instance) or completely.
Assurance and cancellation policies. Search for a complete money-back guarantee, or at least a trial duration, in case you are not pleased with the service. And you’ll want the capability to cancel at any time without any penalties (and a full refund if monthly fees have currently been paid).
Discount rates. Ask about discount rates for numerous individuals in the exact same home, along with for veterans, subscription organizations, medical insurance or through a health center, medical or care company. Ask if the company provides any discount rates choices or a sliding cost scale for people with lower earnings.
Insurance coverage. For the most part, Medicare and private insurance provider will not cover the expenses of a medical alert. In some States, Medicaid may cover all or part of the cost. You can contact your personal insurer to see if it provides discounts or recommendations.
Tax deductions. Check with your tax professional to learn if the expense of a medical alert is tax deductible as a clinically required expense.
