Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

    1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Initially, medical alert systems were developed to work inside your home, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Numerous businesses now also offer the option of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who may not have a landline.

With these systems, pressing the wearable call button enables you to talk to a dispatcher through a base unit located in your home.

Many companies offer mobile choices, too. You can utilize these systems in the house, but they’ll also enable you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These operate over cellular networks and integrate GPS technology. By doing this, if you get lost or push the call button for help, however are not able to talk, the monitoring service can locate you.

  • Should You Add a Fall-Detection Feature?

Some businesses offer the choice of automatic fall detection, for an extra month-to-month charge. Manufacturers state these gadgets notice falls when they take place and immediately contact the dispatch center, simply as they would if you had pushed the call button.

  • Whats the Cost?

Look for a company with no extra charges related to devices, shipping, setup, activation, or service and repair work. Do not fall for frauds that offer totally free service or “donated or used” devices.
Contracts. You ought to not have to enter into a long-term contract. You should just have to pay ongoing regular monthly costs, which ought to range between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Beware about spending for service ahead of time, because you never know when you’ll have to stop the service momentarily (due to a hospitalization, for example) or completely.
Assurance and cancellation policies. Look for a full money-back guarantee, or a minimum of a trial duration, in case you are not pleased with the service. And you’ll want the capability to cancel at any time with no penalties (and a full refund if month-to-month charges have currently been paid).
Discount rates. Ask about discount rates for several people in the very same household, along with for veterans, membership organizations, medical insurance or by means of a medical facility, medical or care company. Ask if the company uses any discount options or a sliding charge scale for people with lower incomes.
Insurance. For the many part, Medicare and private insurance companies will not cover the expenses of a medical alert. In some States, Medicaid may cover all or part of the cost. You can talk to your personal insurance company to see if it uses discounts or recommendations.
Tax reductions. Consult your tax accountant to discover if the expense of a medical alert is tax deductible as a medically required expense.

Its growth continued with San Antonio developing into a major city, with 241 residents and 32 businesses in 1990.[2]
