Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

    1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Originally, medical alert systems were designed to work inside your house, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Many companies now also offer the choice of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who may not have a landline.

With these systems, pressing the wearable call button enables you to speak to a dispatcher through a base unit located in your home.

However, numerous companies provide mobile alternatives, too. You can utilize these systems in your home, however they’ll also enable you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These run over cellular networks and incorporate GPS technology. By doing this, if you get lost or press the call button for help, but are unable to talk, the tracking service can locate you.

  • Should You Add a Fall-Detection Feature?

Some companies offer the choice of automated fall detection, for an extra regular monthly charge. Makers say these gadgets notice falls when they take place and automatically get in touch with the dispatch center, simply as they would if you had actually pushed the call button.

  • Whats the Expense?

Look for a business with no extra costs related to devices, shipping, installation, activation, or service and repair work. Do not fall for scams that offer complimentary service or “donated or used” devices.
Contracts. You need to not need to enter into a long-term agreement. You should only need to pay ongoing month-to-month fees, which ought to vary in between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Be careful about paying for service beforehand, considering that you never ever understand when you’ll need to stop the service temporarily (due to a hospitalization, for example) or permanently.
Assurance and cancellation policies. Search for a complete money-back warranty, or at least a trial duration, in case you are not pleased with the service. And you’ll desire the ability to cancel at any time with no penalties (and a full refund if month-to-month costs have actually currently been paid).
Discounts. Inquire about discount rates for numerous people in the exact same family, as well as for veterans, subscription companies, medical insurance or by means of a healthcare facility, medical or care organization. Ask if the business uses any discount rates choices or a moving fee scale for people with lower incomes.
Insurance coverage. For the many part, Medicare and personal insurer will not cover the costs of a medical alert. In some States, Medicaid may cover all or part of the expense. You can talk to your private insurance company to see if it provides discounts or recommendations.
Tax reductions. Consult your tax expert to discover if the expense of a medical alert is tax deductible as a clinically required cost.
