Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

    1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Originally, medical alert systems were created to work inside your house, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Numerous businesses now also use the choice of home-based systems that work over a mobile network, for those who might not have a landline.

With these systems, pushing the wearable call button enables you to speak to a dispatcher through a base unit situated in your home.

Many companies use mobile choices, too. You can utilize these systems in the house, but they’ll also allow you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These operate over cellular networks and include GPS technology. In this manner, if you get lost or push the call button for help, but are unable to talk, the tracking service can locate you.

  • Should You Include a Fall-Detection Function?

Some businesses use the option of automatic fall detection, for an extra month-to-month fee. Makers state these devices sense falls when they happen and immediately contact the dispatch center, just as they would if you had pressed the call button.

  • Whats the Expense?

Look for a company with no extra fees related to devices, shipping, setup, activation, or service and repair work. Do not fall for frauds that use complimentary service or “donated or utilized” devices.
Agreements. You need to not have to participate in a long-lasting agreement. You need to just need to pay ongoing regular monthly costs, which need to vary between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Be careful about paying for service ahead of time, because you never know when you’ll have to stop the service temporarily (due to a hospitalization, for example) or permanently.
Warranty and cancellation policies. Try to find a complete money-back assurance, or at least a trial period, in case you are not pleased with the service. And you’ll want the ability to cancel at any time with no charges (and a complete refund if monthly charges have already been paid).
Discount rates. Ask about discounts for several individuals in the exact same household, as well as for veterans, membership companies, medical insurance coverage or by means of a hospital, medical or care organization. Ask if the business offers any discount rates alternatives or a sliding cost scale for individuals with lower earnings.
Insurance. For the many part, Medicare and personal insurer will not cover the expenses of a medical alert. In some States, Medicaid might cover all or part of the expense. You can check with your private insurance company to see if it uses discount rates or referrals.
Tax reductions. Talk to your tax accountant to learn if the expense of a medical alert is tax deductible as a medically necessary expenditure.
