Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

    1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Originally, medical alert systems were designed to work inside your home, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Numerous businesses now also offer the choice of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who may not have a landline.

With these systems, pressing the wearable call button enables you to talk to a dispatcher through a base system located in your house.

However, lots of companies use mobile alternatives, too. You can utilize these systems at home, but they’ll also permit you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These run over cellular networks and integrate GPS technology. In this manner, if you get lost or press the call button for assistance, but are not able to talk, the monitoring service can find you.

  • Should You Add a Fall-Detection Feature?

Some companies use the choice of automatic fall detection, for an additional monthly charge. Producers say these gadgets notice falls when they take place and immediately get in touch with the dispatch center, just as they would if you had actually pushed the call button.

  • Whats the Cost?

Look for a company with no extra fees related to equipment, shipping, setup, activation, or service and repair. Do not fall for scams that offer totally free service or “donated or utilized” devices.
You need to just have to pay continuous regular monthly fees, which must vary between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Be careful about paying for service in advance, because you never ever know when you’ll need to stop the service temporarily (due to a hospitalization, for circumstances) or permanently.
Assurance and cancellation policies. Try to find a complete money-back assurance, or at least a trial duration, in case you are not satisfied with the service. And you’ll desire the capability to cancel at any time with no charges (and a full refund if monthly costs have already been paid).
Discounts. Ask about discounts for several people in the same family, in addition to for veterans, membership companies, medical insurance or by means of a healthcare facility, medical or care organization. Ask if the company provides any discount alternatives or a sliding cost scale for people with lower earnings.
Insurance. For the most part, Medicare and personal insurer will not cover the expenses of a medical alert. In some States, Medicaid might cover all or part of the expense. You can contact your personal insurer to see if it provides discount rates or recommendations.
Tax reductions. Consult your tax expert to learn if the expense of a medical alert is tax deductible as a medically necessary expenditure.
