Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

    1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Originally, medical alert systems were developed to work inside your house, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Many companies now also offer the alternative of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who might not have a landline.

With these systems, pushing the wearable call button enables you to talk to a dispatcher through a base system situated in your home.

But, many businesses provide mobile options, too. You can use these systems in your home, but they’ll also permit you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These run over cellular networks and incorporate GPS technology. This way, if you get lost or press the call button for help, but are unable to talk, the tracking service can find you.

  • Should You Include a Fall-Detection Feature?

Some companies provide the alternative of automated fall detection, for an extra regular monthly charge. Producers state these devices pick up falls when they happen and automatically contact the dispatch center, simply as they would if you had actually pressed the call button.

  • Whats the Expense?

Costs. Be careful of complicated pricing plans and surprise charges. Try to find a company without any additional costs connected to equipment, shipping, setup, activation, or service and repair work. Don’t fall for frauds that use free service or “donated or used” equipment.
You must only have to pay continuous regular monthly costs, which ought to vary in between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Warranty and cancellation policies. Search for a full money-back guarantee, or at least a trial duration, in case you are not pleased with the service. And you’ll want the capability to cancel at any time without any charges (and a complete refund if monthly fees have already been paid).
Discounts. Inquire about discount rates for numerous people in the very same household, as well as for veterans, subscription organizations, medical insurance coverage or by means of a health center, medical or care company. Ask if the business offers any discount rates alternatives or a moving fee scale for people with lower incomes.
Insurance coverage. For the many part, Medicare and personal insurance companies will not cover the costs of a medical alert. In some States, Medicaid might cover all or part of the expense. You can talk to your personal insurance company to see if it provides discounts or recommendations.
Tax reductions. Check with your tax accountant to learn if the expense of a medical alert is tax deductible as a clinically essential expenditure.
