Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

    1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Originally, medical alert systems were designed to work inside your home, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Numerous businesses now also offer the choice of home-based systems that work over a mobile network, for those who may not have a landline.

With these systems, pressing the wearable call button allows you to talk to a dispatcher through a base system situated in your home.

Lots of companies provide mobile options, too. You can use these systems in your home, however they’ll also allow you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These operate over cellular networks and integrate GPS technology. In this manner, if you get lost or press the call button for aid, but are not able to talk, the monitoring service can find you.

  • Should You Add a Fall-Detection Function?

Some companies use the choice of automatic fall detection, for an extra regular monthly cost. Makers say these gadgets sense falls when they occur and automatically get in touch with the dispatch center, just as they would if you had actually pressed the call button.

  • Whats the Expense?

Look for a company with no extra costs related to devices, shipping, setup, activation, or service and repair. Don’t fall for rip-offs that offer free service or “donated or used” devices.
Contracts. You should not need to enter into a long-lasting agreement. You ought to only have to pay continuous month-to-month costs, which should range in between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Beware about spending for service in advance, since you never ever know when you’ll need to stop the service temporarily (due to a hospitalization, for example) or completely.
Guarantee and cancellation policies. Look for a complete money-back assurance, or at least a trial period, in case you are not satisfied with the service. And you’ll want the ability to cancel at any time with no charges (and a full refund if month-to-month charges have currently been paid).
Discounts. Ask about discount rates for several people in the very same home, along with for veterans, membership companies, medical insurance or by means of a healthcare facility, medical or care company. Ask if the business provides any discount options or a moving cost scale for people with lower earnings.
For the most part, Medicare and personal insurance companies will not cover the costs of a medical alert. You can inspect with your personal insurance business to see if it offers discount rates or recommendations.
Tax deductions. Consult your tax professional to find out if the expense of a medical alert is tax deductible as a clinically essential cost.
