- Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?
Initially, medical alert systems were designed to work inside your house, with your landline telephone.
And you can still go that route. Many businesses now also use the choice of home-based systems that work over a mobile network, for those who might not have a landline.
With these systems, pushing the wearable call button allows you to speak to a dispatcher through a base unit located in your house.
Numerous businesses provide mobile options, too. You can use these systems at home, however they’ll also allow you to call for help while you’re out and about.
These run over cellular networks and incorporate GPS technology. In this manner, if you get lost or push the call button for help, but are not able to talk, the monitoring service can locate you.
Some companies offer the choice of automated fall detection, for an additional month-to-month cost. Manufacturers state these devices sense falls when they happen and automatically get in touch with the dispatch center, simply as they would if you had pushed the call button.
Look for a company with no additional charges related to devices, shipping, setup, activation, or service and repair. Do not fall for rip-offs that offer free service or “donated or used” devices.
Agreements. You should not need to participate in a long-lasting agreement. You must only need to pay ongoing month-to-month fees, which must vary between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Beware about paying for service ahead of time, since you never ever understand when you’ll have to stop the service temporarily (due to a hospitalization, for example) or completely.
Assurance and cancellation policies. Search for a full money-back guarantee, or a minimum of a trial duration, in case you are not satisfied with the service. And you’ll want the ability to cancel at any time without any charges (and a full refund if month-to-month fees have already been paid).
Discounts. Ask about discounts for multiple people in the same home, as well as for veterans, membership companies, medical insurance or through a hospital, medical or care organization. Ask if the business provides any discount rates choices or a moving fee scale for individuals with lower incomes.
Insurance. For the most part, Medicare and personal insurance companies will not cover the expenses of a medical alert. In some States, Medicaid might cover all or part of the expense. You can consult your personal insurance company to see if it offers discounts or recommendations.
Tax reductions. Contact your tax professional to discover if the expense of a medical alert is tax deductible as a clinically required expenditure.
