Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ
- Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?
Originally, medical alert systems were developed to work inside your house, with your landline telephone.
And you can still go that route. Many businesses now also offer the choice of home-based systems that work over a mobile network, for those who might not have a landline.
With these systems, pushing the wearable call button permits you to speak with a dispatcher through a base unit located in your home.
Many companies provide mobile options, too. You can utilize these systems at home, but they’ll also allow you to call for help while you’re out and about.
These run over cellular networks and integrate GPS technology. In this manner, if you get lost or push the call button for assistance, but are not able to talk, the monitoring service can locate you.
Some companies provide the option of automatic fall detection, for an extra month-to-month cost. Producers state these devices notice falls when they occur and automatically get in touch with the dispatch center, just as they would if you had actually pushed the call button.
Look for a business with no additional fees related to devices, shipping, installation, activation, or service and repair. Don’t fall for rip-offs that offer totally free service or “donated or utilized” devices.
You must just have to pay ongoing monthly fees, which should range in between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Be mindful about paying for service in advance, considering that you never ever know when you’ll require to stop the service briefly (due to a hospitalization, for circumstances) or permanently.
Assurance and cancellation policies. Search for a complete money-back warranty, or a minimum of a trial period, in case you are not pleased with the service. And you’ll want the capability to cancel at any time without any charges (and a full refund if month-to-month costs have currently been paid).
Discounts. Inquire about discounts for several individuals in the exact same home, as well as for veterans, subscription organizations, medical insurance coverage or via a health center, medical or care organization. Ask if the business offers any discount rates alternatives or a moving fee scale for people with lower earnings.
Insurance coverage. For the many part, Medicare and personal insurance companies will not cover the costs of a medical alert. In some States, Medicaid may cover all or part of the expense. You can check with your private insurer to see if it offers discounts or referrals.
Tax reductions. Talk to your tax professional to find out if the expense of a medical alert is tax deductible as a medically necessary expenditure.
