Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

    1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Originally, medical alert systems were designed to work inside your house, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Many companies now also offer the choice of home-based systems that work over a mobile network, for those who may not have a landline.

With these systems, pushing the wearable call button enables you to speak to a dispatcher through a base unit situated in your home.

Lots of businesses offer mobile options, too. You can utilize these systems at home, however they’ll also permit you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These operate over cellular networks and incorporate GPS technology. By doing this, if you get lost or push the call button for help, but are not able to talk, the tracking service can find you.

  • Should You Add a Fall-Detection Function?
  • Some businesses provide the choice of automated fall detection, for an additional month-to-month fee. Producers say these devices pick up falls when they happen and instantly contact the dispatch center, simply as they would if you had pushed the call button.

  • Whats the Cost?
  • Look for a company with no additional fees related to equipment, shipping, installation, activation, or service and repair. Do not fall for rip-offs that use complimentary service or “donated or used” devices.
You ought to just have to pay ongoing regular monthly charges, which must range between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Be cautious about paying for service in advance, because you never understand when you’ll need to stop the service briefly (due to a hospitalization, for instance) or permanently.
Guarantee and cancellation policies. Search for a full money-back assurance, or at least a trial duration, in case you are not pleased with the service. And you’ll want the capability to cancel at any time with no charges (and a full refund if month-to-month costs have already been paid).
Discount rates. Inquire about discounts for multiple people in the exact same household, along with for veterans, subscription companies, medical insurance or through a healthcare facility, medical or care company. Ask if the company provides any discount choices or a sliding charge scale for individuals with lower incomes.
For the many part, Medicare and personal insurance coverage companies will not cover the costs of a medical alert. You can examine with your personal insurance coverage business to see if it uses discount rates or recommendations.
Tax deductions. Consult your tax professional to find out if the cost of a medical alert is tax deductible as a clinically required expenditure.
