Senior Alert Systems and Medical Alert Devices FAQ

    1. Do You want a Home-Based or Mobile System?

Initially, medical alert systems were created to work inside your house, with your landline telephone.

And you can still go that route. Lots of companies now also provide the option of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who may not have a landline.

With these systems, pressing the wearable call button enables you to speak with a dispatcher through a base system situated in your house.

Many businesses provide mobile alternatives, too. You can utilize these systems in your home, however they’ll also permit you to call for help while you’re out and about.

These operate over cellular networks and incorporate GPS technology. This way, if you get lost or push the call button for assistance, but are not able to talk, the monitoring service can locate you.

  • Should You Include a Fall-Detection Function?
  • Some companies use the choice of automated fall detection, for an additional month-to-month charge. Makers say these gadgets sense falls when they occur and automatically contact the dispatch center, simply as they would if you had pushed the call button.

  • Whats the Cost?
  • Costs. Beware of complex rate strategies and hidden charges. Try to find a company with no additional costs connected to equipment, shipping, setup, activation, or service and repair. Don’t fall for frauds that offer complimentary service or “donated or utilized” devices.

Take care about spending for service in advance, because you never ever understand when you’ll need to stop the service momentarily (due to a hospitalization, for example) or permanently.
Assurance and cancellation policies. Look for a complete money-back guarantee, or a minimum of a trial period, in case you are not satisfied with the service. And you’ll desire the ability to cancel at any time without any penalties (and a full refund if month-to-month fees have currently been paid).
Discount rates. Inquire about discounts for numerous people in the very same home, in addition to for veterans, membership organizations, medical insurance coverage or via a hospital, medical or care organization. Ask if the company uses any discount rates alternatives or a sliding charge scale for people with lower earnings.
Insurance. For the a lot of part, Medicare and private insurance provider will not cover the expenses of a medical alert. In some States, Medicaid may cover all or part of the expense. You can check with your personal insurance company to see if it offers discount rates or referrals.
Tax deductions. Consult your tax professional to discover if the expense of a medical alert is tax deductible as a medically required cost.
