Originally, medical alert systems were created to work inside your house, with your landline telephone.
And you can still go that route. Lots of businesses now also use the alternative of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who may not have a landline.
With these systems, pressing the wearable call button allows you to speak to a dispatcher through a base unit located in your house.
However, lots of companies offer mobile alternatives, too. You can use these systems at home, but they’ll also permit you to call for help while you’re out and about.
These operate over cellular networks and include GPS technology. By doing this, if you get lost or push the call button for aid, but are unable to talk, the monitoring service can find you.
Some companies use the option of automatic fall detection, for an extra month-to-month cost. Producers state these devices pick up falls when they take place and immediately contact the dispatch center, simply as they would if you had pushed the call button.
Fees. Be careful of complex price strategies and hidden fees. Look for a business with no extra costs connected to equipment, shipping, installation, activation, or service and repair. Do not fall for rip-offs that offer free service or “donated or used” devices.
You ought to only have to pay continuous regular monthly costs, which need to range between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Be mindful about paying for service in advance, given that you never understand when you’ll need to stop the service briefly (due to a hospitalization, for instance) or completely.
Guarantee and cancellation policies. Look for a complete money-back guarantee, or at least a trial period, in case you are not pleased with the service. And you’ll want the capability to cancel at any time with no penalties (and a complete refund if month-to-month charges have already been paid).
Discounts. Ask about discounts for numerous people in the exact same home, along with for veterans, subscription organizations, medical insurance coverage or by means of a hospital, medical or care company. Ask if the business uses any discount rates options or a sliding charge scale for people with lower earnings.
Insurance. For the many part, Medicare and personal insurer will not cover the costs of a medical alert. In some States, Medicaid may cover all or part of the expense. You can consult your personal insurance company to see if it provides discount rates or recommendations.
Tax deductions. Talk to your tax accountant to discover if the cost of a medical alert is tax deductible as a medically required expense.
