Orangefield is an unincorporated community located in the Beaumont-Port Arthur metropolitan area, approximately twelve miles east of Beaumont in Orange County, Texas, United States. (The latitude of Orangefield is 30.074N. The longitude is -93.855W). In 1913, the town began to develop around the oilfield just west of Orange, and its name was derived from being called the "Orange Oil Field", which was later shorted to "Orangefield". After a major producing well was discovered in August 1913, a post office was established for Orangefield in 1922.[1]

It was a small community of farmers before the discovery of oil. A few rice farms and marshes comprised the population in the area between Orange, Bridge City, and Vidor. The rice crop planted in the area was linked to W.R. Hill, possibly as early as 1888. Immigrant farmers made up much of the population in the area that was divided into three different communities. The communities fell under the names Oilla, Terry, and Duncan's Woods. It is unclear when the name Orangefield actually formed, but it was sometime after the first oil well struck.[2]

Many farmers allowed oil wells to be dug on their properties, especially since they still owned the mineral rights. The Bland oil well was the first to strike oil in 1913. It received the name "Old Faithful," because it was said to "head like Old Faithful every 50 minutes." Wildcatters from all over raced to the area after the news of the Bland well. The discovery of oil in Orange County raised a lot of hopes. These hopes began to dwindle during the ten years until the true boom commenced.[3]

Scroggins is an unincorporated community in Franklin County, Texas, United States.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, Scroggins had an estimated population of 125 in 2000.

Settlement of the area began in the 1850s. The community was named after Milt Scroggins, a local sawmill operator. It eventually became a shipping point on the East Line and Red River Railroad, which was built through the area in 1877. Its post office was established in 1891. The sawmill remained in 1896 and added three stores. Its population was 25 from 1914 through the 1930s. At that time, it had only one store and several scattered homes. It began to grow sometime after World War II. It returned to three businesses and had 80 residents in 1952. Another business opened in the community in 1988 and the population grew to 125, which remained there in 2000. The community's general store owners, Ben and Joanne Glaze, organized the Catalpa Worm Festival in June 2004 to help foster community fellowship and celebration. Catalpa trees and their parasites are common in the community.[2] The community has a post office with the ZIP code 75480.[3]

Discount rates. Port Arthur is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, 90 mi (140 km) east of Houston. Part of the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area, Port Arthur lies primarily in Jefferson County, with a small, uninhabited extension in Orange County. The largest oil refinery in the United States, the Motiva Refinery, is located there.[4]

The population of Port Arthur was 53,818 at the 2010 census,[5] down from 57,755 at the 2000 census. By 2020, its population had rebounded to 56,039.[6] Early attempts at settlements in the area had all failed. However, in 1895, Arthur Stilwell founded Port Arthur, and the town quickly grew. Port Arthur was incorporated as a city in 1898 and soon developed into a seaport. It eventually became the center of a large oil refinery network.[7] The Rainbow Bridge across the Neches River connects Port Arthur to Bridge City.

Highlands is a census-designated place (CDP) located along the Union Pacific Railroad, north of Interstate 10 and west of Farm to Market Road 2100, in an industrialized area of unincorporated Harris County, Texas, United States.[3] The population was 8,612 at the 2020 census.[4]

The community was named Highlands because the east bank of the San Jacinto River, where Highlands is located, has a higher elevation than the west bank of the river. By 1908, Highlands became a station on the Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railway. A post office opened in 1929. Highlands incorporated in 1930, but its charter was voided, leaving Highlands as unincorporated again. In the 1930s, Highlands had 20 businesses and its population decreased from 350 to 200. The 1936 Harris County highway map indicated two churches, a factory, a school, and a sawmill in Highlands. Highlands housed military members and war plant personnel during World War II. By 1948, Highlands had 3,000 residents and 75 businesses. In the 1950s, local business decreased and the population decreased to 2,723. A 1956 attempt for Highlands to incorporate did not pass. In the 1960s, Highlands had a canning sales company and an industrial chemical company. In the early 1960s, Highlands had 4,336 residents and 82 businesses. In 1965, W. O. Hutson built the Double Trouble Youth Rodeo Arena. In the early 1970s, Highlands had 3,462 residents and 66 businesses. By 1977, Highlands had 5,000 residents; in 1989 Highlands reported the same population. In 1990, Highlands had an estimated population of 6,632.[3]
