Originally, medical alert systems were developed to work inside your home, with your landline telephone.
And you can still go that route. Lots of businesses now also use the alternative of home-based systems that work over a cellular network, for those who might not have a landline.
With these systems, pressing the wearable call button enables you to speak with a dispatcher through a base unit situated in your home.
However, lots of businesses provide mobile options, too. You can utilize these systems in the house, however they’ll also enable you to call for help while you’re out and about.
These operate over cellular networks and integrate GPS technology. By doing this, if you get lost or press the call button for assistance, but are not able to talk, the tracking service can find you.
- Should You Include a Fall-Detection Feature?
Some companies use the option of automated fall detection, for an additional monthly cost. Manufacturers say these gadgets notice falls when they happen and instantly contact the dispatch center, just as they would if you had pressed the call button.
- Whats the Cost?
Look for a company with no extra charges related to devices, shipping, setup, activation, or service and repair work. Do not fall for frauds that use totally free service or “donated or utilized” devices.
Contracts. You ought to not have to participate in a long-lasting contract. You must only have to pay continuous month-to-month costs, which must range between $25 and $45 a month (about $1 a day). Warranty and cancellation policies. Search for a full money-back warranty, or at least a trial duration, in case you are not pleased with the service. And you’ll want the capability to cancel at any time with no charges (and a full refund if regular monthly fees have already been paid).
Discount rates. Ask about discounts for several individuals in the exact same family, along with for veterans, membership organizations, medical insurance coverage or by means of a health center, medical or care company. Ask if the company offers any discount rates alternatives or a sliding cost scale for people with lower incomes.
Insurance. For the most part, Medicare and personal insurer will not cover the expenses of a medical alert. In some States, Medicaid may cover all or part of the cost. You can contact your personal insurance provider to see if it uses discount rates or recommendations.
Tax deductions. Check with your tax professional to find out if the cost of a medical alert is tax deductible as a clinically required expenditure.
